Stay at Boutique Hotel Mariposita de San Telmo

During this holiday, we will stay at Boutique Hotel Mariposita de San Telmo in Buenos Aires, located in the San Telmo neighborhood. We chose this hotel because it also houses a tango school where we will have our lessons. The hotel is a small paradise in the city center, offering all necessary comforts. The rooms are modern, with an en-suite bathroom, toilet, fridge, microwave, and kettle. There is also free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, a garden, a cozy common space, and a kitchen.

About Mariposita de San Telmo
Carolina Bonaventura, founder and director of Mariposita de San Telmo, started the tango school and hotel 16 years ago. She set her sights on an old house and “rebuilt” it with one goal: to give tangueros the best possible place to enjoy their tango in Buenos Aires. Located in a cultural area, full of art and close to many milongas.
It’s a fantastic location with the best dance floor in the city, a beautiful outdoor space, comfortable hotel rooms, and run by Carolina and her mother.
It’s a family business run by two artists: Carolina’s mother, the architect, and Carolina, the dancer.
They created Mariposita with passion, love, and respect for their heritage.
A place for tango lovers!

About the San Telmo Neighborhood

Barrio de San Telmo
In Buenos Aires, every neighborhood has its own atmosphere and character. San Telmo, for instance, is often described as the “Jordaan of Buenos Aires.” The neighborhood is full of charm with narrow streets, artists, unique bars, and restaurants. The beautiful mansions are also notable—remnants from the 19th century when San Telmo was home to the wealthier families of the city. San Telmo is also great for tango, given the many tango schools and institutes.

Food & Drinks

Good food is an essential part of daily life in Buenos Aires. The locals know what makes a great kitchen, and they draw inspiration from all corners of the world. The restaurants, bistros, and cafes cater to every possible budget, from delicious street food to multi-course menus at gastronomic restaurants. Argentina is especially famous for its beef, and steak is one of the most popular dishes in Buenos Aires.

Excursions

Feria de Mataderos
Feria de Mataderos is a traditional Sunday market held every week in the Mataderos neighborhood. It’s the perfect place to enjoy traditional music and dance, gaucho competitions, beautiful (often handmade) souvenirs, and delicious food. The square is surrounded by massive parillas (Argentine barbecues) and over 100 market stalls offering a variety of goods.

Plaza Dorrego
Plaza Dorrego is a famous square in the heart of the San Telmo neighborhood. It’s one of the oldest squares in the city and is surrounded by bars, pubs, and coffeehouses. Tango dancers often perform their best moves in the square. Every Sunday morning, there is a large antiques market, and the square and surrounding streets are filled with stalls offering art, kitsch, and antiques. There are also often street artists and mimes.

La Boca
La Boca is one of the most colorful neighborhoods in Buenos Aires. The heart of the tourist part of La Boca is El Caminito street, which is lined with many restaurants and souvenir shops. While La Boca is not definitively the birthplace of Tango, it was here that the dance and music became incredibly popular. You can still find many tango clubs and tango dancers/shows on the streets. The houses are decorated with murals about Tango and the local culture. El Caminito, with its murals and statues, is sometimes called “the world’s first pedestrian open-air museum.” The neighborhood is also world-famous for its renowned football club, Boca Juniors, and their former star player, Diego Maradona.
